Mommies Training

Between the year 2000 and 2009, the use of opioids, such as heroin or prescription pain relievers, during pregnancy increased fivefold. These national trends are reflected in the rising numbers of women who use substances while pregnant. Abrupt opioid withdrawal during pregnancy is not advised; therefore, it is recommended that opioid-dependent women who become pregnant begin medication assisted treatment (MAT) with a long-acting opioid such as methadone. MAT during pregnancy is associated with better pregnancy outcomes due to more consistent prenatal care, better maternal nutrition and a reduction in risk factors commonly associated with illicit substance use. However, MAT is only one component of the interprofessional, collaborative, integrated model of care that is essential for meeting the many needs of pregnant and parenting women with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs).

During this workshop, learners will be introduced to the key components of the Mommies Program, a successful program of integrated care. They will also be assisted with planning for the development of a similar program that utilizes available resources to meet the needs of pregnant and parenting women with SUDs in their community.
